Ohatchee, Alabama - Calhoun County Confederate Memorial is located at Janney Furnace Park! "World's largest black granite Confederate Memorial"

This beautiful Calhoun County Confederate Monument is located at Janney Furnace Park in Ohatchee, Alabama. Erected in June 2003 by the Sons of Confederate Veterans, it is described as the "world’s largest black granite Confederate memorial." The monument features the names of 908 men from Calhoun County who died while serving in the Confederate States of America during the War. It is part of a historic site that includes the Janney Furnace, built in 1863 to produce pig iron for the Confederacy but destroyed by Union forces in 1864 before it could operate. The park also houses a Confederate and Native American Museum with War Between the States and Native American artifacts.
In 2020, the Anniston City Council voted 4-1 to relocate a separate Confederate monument, the Major John Pelham obelisk, from downtown Anniston to Janney Furnace Park, where it would join the Calhoun County Confederate Memorial.
The monument and its park are maintained by the Calhoun County Parks and Recreation Office and host annual events like "Civil War" reenactments and a Native American festival. The site is listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage. Video taken May 2024. -RJ
