Lakeland, Florida - Confederate memorial in a Veterans Memorial Park (Polk County)
Salute! This Confederate memorial in a Veterans Memorial Park in Lakeland, Florida (Polk County), is a 26-foot-tall cenotaph originally erected in 1910 by the Lakeland Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in Munn Park, a central downtown location. Dedicated to honor and memorialize Confederate veterans who served and died in defense of their homes and country in America's largest war. It features inscriptions, a poem, and Confederate flag imagery, costing $1,750, with $1,550 raised by donations from the community and $200 from the city. The statue on the monument depicts a common Confederate soldier.
In December 2017, Lakeland’s City Commission voted to relocate the monument. After a federal lawsuit by Save Southern Heritage Florida was dismissed in January 2019, the monument was moved in March 2019 to this Veterans Memorial Park, less than a mile away, at a cost of $225,000, funded by red-light camera revenue and private donations.
One of the inscriptions on the monument reads, "IN MEMORY OF THAT NOBLE BAND WHO HAVE CROSSED THE MYSTIC STREAM, AND ARE RESTING NOW IN THAT HAPPY LAND, WHERE PEACE AND PLEASURE REIGN SUPREME. THE HEROIC DEEDS WILL NEVER FADE, FROM MEMORY'S BRIGHTEST PAGE, AND THEIR BRAVE DEFENSE OF COUNTRY AND HOME, IS LEFT AS A GLORIOUS HERITAGE."
