BEFORE the removal. NEVER FORGET!!! This is the Montgomery County Confederate Memorial overlooking the Potomac River at White's Ferry (named Jubal A Early) in Dickerson, Maryland Sept 7, 2018. It was only at this site for about a year!
Originally erected on June 3, 1913 in the Courthouse Square in front of the Red Brick Courthouse in Rockville, Montgomery County, it was relocated to this private property in July 2017 at a cost of about $100,000. At first, the monument seemingly appeared to have found a good home, but after the property changed hands (I heard the Gentleman who gained ownership and respectfully placed it there had died and ownership passed to an unappreciative grandson), it was removed again from this site only a year later and has been in storage ever since. At about the same time the Ferry shutdown due to land rights disputes and the Jubal Early Ferry name was removed.

In 1867, the remains of the 50 soldiers buried here were gathered and reinterred in a mass grave in this northeast corner of Oakwood Cemetery, which was established in 1859. This site is notable for having individual headstones with names and records for 48 of the 50 soldiers, a rarity for that era of mass burials. The names include soldiers primarily from the Carolinas and Georgia, such as Capt. B. L. Burnett (1st S.C.) and W. W. Saunders (2nd S.C.). The Confederate Memorial, erected in 1899, is an obelisk on a concrete and stone base, now painted with the Confederate battle flag. Sharing brief stories of the ignored and forgotten. The following was published in the Nov 1, 1901 issue of the Times Newspaper in Richmond, Virginia about Jeff Shields: Jefferson (Jeff) Shields is a man of rugged character and is a great favorite among the white people, especially the old-soldier element, for Uncle Jeff counts himself one of the followers of the “Lost Cause.” Uncle Jeff entered the Confederate service as cook [and body servant] with his young master, James K. Edmondson, who became colonel of the 27th Virginia Regiment, Stonewall Brigade. Later he was cook for General “Stonewall” Jackson, and of this honor he never tires of talking. After General Jackson’s death, he cooked for General J.E.B. Stuart, then for an officers’ mess until the close of the war.
