Clarksville, Texas - Red River County Town Square & Confederate Monument
Salute! This Red River County Confederate Monument in Clarksville, Texas, is located in the town square, in the historic downtown area near the Red River County Courthouse. Erected in 1912, it features a sculpture of a Confederate soldier and was placed in the center of the square, replacing earlier structures like a bandstand and a water well. The monument is part of a broader historical setting that includes markers for the Five Signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence (most of whom later supported the Confederacy) from Red River County. Clarksville, the county seat of Red River County, had a population of 2,857 in 2023, down from 3,285 in 2010. The town is known for its historic architecture.

The people of the south, animated by the spirit of 1776, to preserve their rights, withdrew from the federal compact in 1861. The north resorted to coercion. The south, against overwhelming numbers and resources, fought until exhausted.” – Confederate Memorial on the Texas State Capitol grounds.
