10th President of the US, John Tyler. Arguably best President in US history according to the Constitution as ratified

Visiting historic sites around Virginia related to the great John Tyler, 10th President of the United States and arguably the best President in US history (and my 5th cousin, 6x removed). “John Tyler is not a household name, but he should be; perhaps he should even be given a spot on some denomination of American currency. He was arguably the best president in American history—according to the Constitution as ratified. Tyler’s life and administration almost always come in near the bottom of presidential rankings because of his staunch defense of states’ rights both before and after he occupied the presidency, including his support for secession and the Confederate States of America… Tyler, more than any other president, took his oath of office seriously. He came closer to representing the proper mix of executive energy and Jeffersonian restraint that the ratifiers had argued the presidency required than any other man who held the office, either before or after his administration. Tyler quickly turned around a general government that was moving in the wrong direction—and in the process saved the presidency and the Constitution.” -Dr Brion McClanahan, 9 Presidents Who Screwed Up America: And Four Who Tried to Save Her (p. 210). Regnery History.

Continuing; “He [John Tyler] was a stalwart supporter and advocate of states' rights, and he adopted nationalistic policies as president only when they did not infringe on the powers of the states.” – Dr Brion McClanahan

“President John Tyler, the tenth president of the United States, was buried in Hollywood Cemetery in 1862. His death was the only one in presidential history to not be officially recognized in Washington D.C. due to his allegiance to the Confederate States of America. Tyler requested arrangements for a simple burial, but Confederate President Jefferson Davis hosted a grand event, complete with a Confederate flag draped over the coffin. Tyler's monument stands in Presidents Circle not far from President James Monroe's tomb.” – Hollywood Cemetery site

Interesting historical fact: President John Tyler’s son (Robert Tyler) was Confederate Register of the Treasury. Robert’s daughter (John Tyler’s granddaughter) raised the first Confederate Flag at the Capitol building in Montgomery, Alabama.

I recommend the book, "9 Presidents Who Screwed up America, and 4 that who tried to save her" by Brion McClanahan. I found it to be well written, compelling, informative, and a very well-developed argument on who the worst 9 Presidents and 4 best Presidents of all time were. He based his analysis and rankings primarily on which ones were most faithful to their oath of office - that is, preserving, protecting and defending the Constitution. Without giving the book away, he explains why the best Presidents (that helped save America) of all time are.... John Tyler (10th Pres), Thomas Jefferson (3rd Pres), Grover Cleveland (22nd & 24th Pres), and Calvin Coolidge (30th Pres). After reviewing John Tyler's life and Presidency, it should come as no surprise that the President who defended the Constitution the most sided with the Confederacy.
